Teachers

Who teaches at Fandango

Two teachers share the week, and both speak Spanish and English in class.

  • Ester Magallanes, director and folklorico teacher, mid-turn in an olive wrap skirt

    Ester Magallanes

    Director and folklorico teacher

Ester opened Fandango so the girls and boys of the valley could learn the dances their grandparents knew. She teaches the folklorico classes and the waltz for the court, and she greets every new family at the door.

  • Silvestre Urrutia, ballet and tap teacher, seated on a bench in a black leotard and wrap skirt holding a pair of ballet shoes

    Silvestre Urrutia

    Ballet and tap teacher

Silvestre teaches the ballet and tap classes. He starts every class with the music and the count, and he shows each step twice before anyone has to try it.

How we teach

The same plan in every room

  • The count before the step

Every class starts with the music and the count, so a step lands in the right place.

  • Two languages

Ester and Silvestre speak Spanish and English in class, and the front desk answers in either.

  • Each step twice

A step is shown slowly, then with the music, and a teacher is always near to help.
